Non-Departmental Scholarships

The university offers a number of scholarship programs that are not restricted to a specific major or department. This section includes a description of these scholarship opportunities. Most scholarships require separate applications.

2019-2020 WWU Alumni Association Scholarship for Undergraduate Students

The Western Alumni Association is proud to offer Western students the opportunity to receive the WWU Alumni Association Scholarship for Undergraduate Students. Recipients of this honor are students who are making a difference in their communities, and contributing greatly to Western by actively participating in the life of the university.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be one of the following:
    --Full time Western student (taking a minimum of 12 credits)
    --High school senior intending to become a full-time Western student    
       beginning Fall 2019
    --College transfer intending to become a full time Western student beginning 
       Fall 2019
  • GPA minimum cumulative:
    --Currently in college - GPA of 3.10
    --Currently in high school - GPA of 3.50
  • Applicants must be pursuing undergraduate study
  • Applicants must be admitted to Western to receive the scholarship
  • Applicants must submit FAFSA for scholarship consideration
  • Applicants need not be related to or know any alumni to apply

Eligibility:

  • This is a need-based scholarship to fill need, not exceed it

Priority Consideration: 

  • Preference will be given to those with financial need
  • Active students within their community, who participate in leadership building activities, provide service to others, and succeed academically

American Association of University Women Scholarship

This $1,500 scholarship supports the AAUW's goal of "providing educational and lifelong learning opportunities that provide women an opportunity for success."

Qualifications:

  • Applicant must be a woman who has completed at least 90 credits prior to the start of fall 2019 or is a graduate student.
  • Must be a currently enrolled student who completed winter quarter 2019 at WWU.
  • Selection is based primarily on academic achievement. Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Associated Students Scholarships

Associated Students of WWU offers several different scholarships. For more information, please contact Annie Byers at Annie.Byers@wwu.edu or 360-650-3460.

Academic Scholar Award - $1,000

  • A $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to students in recognition of their outstanding academic merit and achievement at WWU.

AS Campus Activities Scholarship - $1,000

  • A $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a student who shows past and/or present experience and involvement in enhancing campus activities at WWU.

AS Community Involvement Scholarship - $1,000

  • A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to students who have shown a commitment to improving the lives of WWU students through their work in the community.

AS Leadership Scholarship - $1,000

  • A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership experience, in their own way, at Western and/or the community.

Ethnic Student Center Academic and Leadership Scholarship - $1,000

  • One $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a student who assists ethnic students, students of color, and/or traditionally underrepresented students in transitioning to Western.

ESC Martin Luther King Jr. Academic and Leadership Scholarship - $1,000

  • One $1,000 scholarship is awarded to an African and/or African American student who exhibits collaborative academic and leadership skills.

ESC Native American Academic and Leadership Scholarship - $1,000

  • One $1,000 scholarship is awarded to an Indigenous, First Nations, Native American, and/or Alaskan Native student who exhibits collaborative academic and leadership skills.

ESC Latino/a/x American Academic and Leadership Scholarship - $1,000

  • One $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a Latina/Latino/Latinix student who exhibits collaborative academic and leadership skills.

ESC Asian and Pacific Islander Academic and Leadership Scholarship - $1,000

  • One $1,000 scholarship is awarded to an Asian/Pacific Islander student who exhibits collaborative academic and leadership skills.

Dan L Smith Scholarship - $2,500

  • One $1,500 scholarship is awarded to a male identified student with a GPA of 3.0 – 3.4 in sophomore-junior status who has an interest in majoring in one of the social sciences and is actively engaged in social change through membership in a progressive Associated Student Club.

AS Diversity Award - $1,000

  • A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to students who have made significant efforts to promote activism, awareness and enthusiasm for diversity issues.

AS Employee Scholarship - $1,000

  • A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to Associated Students employees (hourly or salaried) who have served the AS and WWU.

AS Childcare Scholarship - $1,000

  •  A $1,000 Childcare Scholarship will be given to WWU student-parents who demonstrate a need for financial assistance for childcare in order to be a successful and engaged student.

Bill Reed African American Scholarship

 Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  •  The scholarship shall provide support exclusively for African American students who are undergraduate students at Western Washington University, or to those students who have been admitted to Western Washington University. 
  • Minimum eligibility requirements are defined as a full-time student who maintains a minimum 3.00 GPA.  If a student’s GPA falls below a 3.00 GPA in any given year, the student must personally make his or her appeal to the scholarship committee to continue receiving the scholarship funding.  Only one quarter in any school year may fall below a 3.00 GPA and under no circumstances will funding be continued if the student’s GPA falls below 2.50 GPA.
  • A student may apply for the scholarship more than once as long as the student receives the scholarship for no more than four years of his or her undergraduate study.  A student who has received the scholarship in any given year will receive priority preference to receive the scholarship again as long as minimum eligibility requirements are met.
  • This scholarship funding may benefit applicants in any program, however preference shall be given to students majoring in business, communication or computer science.  No applicant shall be funded beyond 75 percent of his or her total cost for tuition and housing.  Housing costs shall be based on a shared living arrangement.

Creating Hope Scholarship

This $2,000 scholarship recognizes the achievements of WWU students who are undocumented immigrants or the children of undocumented immigrants.

Qualifications:

  • Student must be an undocumented immigrant or the child of an undocumented immigrant.

Facilities Management Scholarship

This fund was established through a gift from the National Association of College and University Business Officers in recognition of an innovative and cost saving floor-care program instituted by Western’s Physical Plant. Preference will be given to spouses, sons and daughters of Western employees within the Facilities Management Department.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate student at Western Washington University
  • Entering freshmen must have graduated from a Whatcom or Skagit County high school; this does not apply to currently enrolled students or transfer students.
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • The scholarship will be awarded to recognize merit, however, financial need may be considered.

Jolene Sanchez Memorial Scholarship

This $2,000 scholarship is intended to support students who have had or are dealing with major medical problems or physical disabilities.

Qualifications:

  • Recipient must have had or be dealing with major medical problems or physical disabilities.

Joy Stokes Scholarship

This $2,500 scholarship honors Joy Stokes, a local Bellingham woman, who bestowed her estate to WWU to help pay the expenses of deserving students who have "already commenced their education and would not be able to continue because of financial reasons."

Qualifications:

  • Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student who completed winter quarter 2019 at WWU.
  • Student must be currently working and plan to work during the 2019-2020 academic year.
  • Student must demonstrate financial need, as determined by information submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA). Priority will be given to students with extreme financial hardships.
  • Preference given to current freshman and sophomores.

Kohlmeier Mikulencak Scholarship in honor of Arthur Poznanski

Made possible by the generous support of Bernhard Kohlmeier and Lisa Ann Mikulencak, the purpose of this scholarship is to provide support for students studying topics related to Holocaust, Genocide Studies, and/or Crimes Against Humanity. We encourage applications from students with diverse interests and backgrounds, women, minorities, individuals with special needs, and veterans.

The scholarship for 2019-2020 ($2,000) may be used to pay any costs related to educational expenses, including, but not limited to, tuition, books, materials, supplies, etc.

Qualification:

  • WWU student who has studied or is studying topics related to Holocaust, Genocide Studies, and/or Crimes Against Humanity.

Learning Without Borders

This $2,000 scholarship recognizes the achievements of students who are undocumented immigrants.

Nabhi Ram Joshi Scholarship

This $1,000 scholarship was established by one of Western’s most devoted patrons, Miriam Snow Mathes, in memory of Nabhi Ram Joshi, a foreign student who passed through the University over 90 years ago.

Qualifications:

  • Full-time undergraduate Western Washington University students. Incoming freshmen and transfer students are eligible to apply. 
  • Scholarship applicants must either have been born in India or have a parent or grandparent born in India.
  • Applicants must demonstrate strong leadership qualities as well as high academic merit.

Susan Brown Advancing Technology Education Scholarship

This $1,500 scholarship recognizes the growing need for support of students interested in teaching technology to faculty and students.

Qualifications:

  • Recipient can be either an undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing.
  • Must be a currently enrolled student who completed winter quarter 2019 at WWU.
  • Students must demonstrate a commitment to advancing technology education at Western through involvement with the Student Technology Center (STC) or Academic Technology and User Services (ATUS). Preference will be given to students involved with the STC.

Talitha E. Carleton Memorial Scholarship

This $1,000 scholarship honors Talitha Carleton, a gifted teacher whose strength of character, humanity and lively mind inspired many. This scholarship is intended for a student with an "inquiring mind who is altruistic, socially responsible, highly principled and shows promise of future achievement."

Qualifications:

  • WWU student, continuing graduate or undergraduate, in the liberal or fine and performing arts.
  • Must be a currently enrolled student who completed winter quarter 2019 at WWU.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.5. Other criteria, such as financial need, leadership qualities and activities will also be considered.

WWU Retirement Association Scholarship

The Western Washington University Retirement Association offers this scholarship to current WWU students. Two $2,500 scholarships will be awarded for 2019-2020.

Qualifications:

  • Student must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Undergraduate students with a minimum of 90 credits completed prior to the start of fall 2019.
  • Preference given to current WWU students who were readmitted to WWU after at least two quarters away.
  • Must have completed winter quarter 2019 at WWU.
  • Must attend at least half time, 6 credits per quarter, in 2019-2020.
  • A minimum GPA of 2.7

WWU Spirit Scholarship

This $2,000 scholarship recognizes current students who have demonstrated school spirit.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a currently enrolled student who completed winter quarter 2019 at WWU.
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.10.
  • Have demonstrated school spirit at Western through their activities and involvement.

Western Foundation Academic Excellence Scholarship

This $2,500 scholarship, established in 1994, is supported by contributions to the Western Foundation’s general academic scholarship program for students with high academic merit and achievement.

Qualifications:

  • Continuing WWU undergraduate students of sophomore, junior or senior status as of fall 2019.
  • Must be currently enrolled undergraduate student who completed winter quarter 2019 at WWU.
  • Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need, as determined by information submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA).
  • Applicants must have a minimum of three quarters of undergraduate study remaining toward their degree in order to be eligible.

Whatcom Educational Credit Union (WECU) Scholarship

Four $1,500 scholarships offered by Whatcom Educational Credit Union (WECU) will be awarded to Western Washington University students for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Qualifications:

  • Full-time undergraduate students (taking a minimum of 12 credits per quarter), pursuing a degree with at least 90 credits completed prior to the start of fall 2019. Transfer students who are entering with 90 credits or more may apply.
  • Minimum accumulated GPA of 2.75
  • Student must demonstrate financial need. The 2019-2020 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA) will be used to determine financial need.
  • Applicant must be a member in good standing at WECU for a minimum of one year. Previous recipients are not eligible to apply.

Women of Western Scholarship

This $2,500 scholarship, established by the campus-affiliated group Women of Western, is for full-time WWU students.

Qualifications:

  • Students of any gender.
  • A minimum GPA of 3.3
  • Must be a currently enrolled student who completed winter quarter 2019 at WWU.
  • Students must demonstrate financial need, as determined by information submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA).
  • Preference will be given to students who demonstrate academic merit and leadership qualities.

Womxn of Color Empowerment Scholarship

The Womxn of Color Empowerment Scholarship was established in February 2007 to provide financial assistance and educational opportunities for WWU students. Up to three scholarships will be awarded ranging from $500-$1,000. Scholarships are available to students who demonstrate support for or experience with the issues and concerns of womxn of color at Western.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Be currently enrolled at Western Washington University
  • Have a cumulative 2.5 grade point average (GPA) or above
  • Have successfully completed at least 24 credits, if an undergraduate student or at least 16 credits, if a graduate student
  • Attend Western full-time in the 2018-2019 academic year (Full-time status is 12+ credits per quarter for undergraduate students or 8+ credits per quarter for graduate students)
