Non-Departmental Scholarships

The university offers a number of scholarship programs that are not restricted to a specific major or department. This section includes a description of these scholarship opportunities. Most scholarships require separate applications.

2019 WWU Alumni Association Mid-Year Scholarship for Undergraduate Students

The Western Alumni Association is proud to offer Western students the opportunity to receive the WWU Alumni Association Scholarship for Undergraduate Students. Recipients of this honor are students who are making a difference in their communities, and contributing greatly to Western by actively participating in the life of the university.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be one of the following:
    --Full time Western student (taking a minimum of 12 credits)
    --High school senior intending to become a full-time Western student    
       beginning winter 2019
    --College transfer intending to become a full time Western student beginning 
       winter 2019
  • GPA minimum cumulative:
    --Currently in college - GPA of 3.10
    --Currently in high school - GPA of 3.50
  • Applicants must be pursuing undergraduate study
  • Applicants must be admitted to Western to receive the scholarship
  • Applicants must submit FAFSA for scholarship consideration (international or undocumented students, follow the instructions under the Financial Aid section)
  • Applicants need not be related to or know any alumni to apply

Eligibility:

  • This is a need-based scholarship to fill need, not exceed it

Priority Consideration: 

  • Preference will be given to those with financial need
  • Active students within their community, who participate in leadership building activities, provide service to others, and succeed academically

American Association of University Women Scholarship

This scholarship supports the AAUW's goal of "providing educational and lifelong learning opportunities that provide women an opportunity for success."

Qualifications:

  • Applicant must be a female who has completed at least 90 credits prior to the start of fall 2018 or is a graduate student.
  • Must have completed winter quarter 2018 at WWU.
  • Selection is based primarily on academic achievement. Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Bill Reed African American Scholarship

 Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  •  The scholarship shall provide support exclusively for African American students who are undergraduate students at Western Washington University, or to those students who have been admitted to Western Washington University. 
  • Minimum eligibility requirements are defined as a full-time student who maintains a minimum 3.00 GPA.  If a student’s GPA falls below a 3.00 GPA in any given year, the student must personally make his or her appeal to the scholarship committee to continue receiving the scholarship funding.  Only one quarter in any school year may fall below a 3.00 GPA and under no circumstances will funding be continued if the student’s GPA falls below 2.50 GPA.
  • A student may apply for the scholarship more than once as long as the student receives the scholarship for no more than four years of his or her undergraduate study.  A student who has received the scholarship in any given year will receive priority preference to receive the scholarship again as long as minimum eligibility requirements are met.
  • This scholarship funding may benefit applicants in any program, however preference shall be given to students majoring in business, communication or computer science.  No applicant shall be funded beyond 75 percent of his or her total cost for tuition and housing.  Housing costs shall be based on a shared living arrangement.

Facilities Management Scholarship

This fund was established through a gift from the National Association of College and University Business Officers in recognition of an innovative and cost saving floor-care program instituted by Western’s Physical Plant. Preference will be given to spouses, sons and daughters of Western employees within the Facilities Management Department.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate student at Western Washington University
  • Entering freshmen must have graduated from a Whatcom or Skagit County high school; this does not apply to currently enrolled students or transfer students.
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • The scholarship will be awarded to recognize merit, however, financial need may be considered.

Jolene Sanchez Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is intended to support tuition, books or other academic needs for students who have had or are dealing with major medical problems or physical disabilities.

Qualifications:

  • Recipient must have had or be dealing with major medical problems or physical disabilities.

Joy Stokes Scholarship

This scholarship honors Joy Stokes, a local Bellingham woman, who bestowed her estate to WWU to help pay the expenses of deserving students.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student who completed winter quarter 2018 at WWU.
  • Student must be currently working and plan to work during the 2018-2019 academic year.
  • Student must demonstrate financial need, as determined by information submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA). Priority will be given to those students with extreme financial hardships.
  • Preference given to current freshman and sophomores.

Learning Without Borders

This scholarship recognizes the achievements of students who are undocumented immigrants.

Qualifications:

  • Must be an undocumented student.

Multicultural Achievement Program (MAP) Scholarship

Western Washington University has included in its design for excellence the need to diversify its student body, faculty, and staff. The Multicultural Achievement Program (MAP) Scholarship is an important component of the university's effort to diversify its student body. New WWU Students do not need to complete this application; MAP Scholarship consideration for incoming freshman and transfer students is processed via the admissions application.

Qualifications:

Applicants must demonstrate solid academic abilities, strong leadership qualities and a commitment to multicultural issues and activities in school or the community. Financial need will be assessed. Applicants must:

  • be a full-time (12 credit hours per quarter) undergraduate student at WWU in 2018-2019 during prior academic year (study abroad, including faculty-led programs, and Extended Education coursework are not eligible).
  • be enrolled at WWU for at least one quarter prior to application deadline and possess a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.3.

Priority consideration is given to applicants who file a valid Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA), demonstrating financial need.

Nabhi Ram Joshi Scholarship

This scholarship was established by one of Western’s most devoted patrons, Miriam Snow Mathes, in memory of Nabhi Ram Joshi, a foreign student who passed through the University over 90 years ago.

Qualifications:

  • Full-time undergraduate Western Washington University students. Incoming freshmen and transfer students are eligible to apply. 
  • Scholarship applicants must either have been born in India or have a parent or grandparent born in India.
  • Applicants must demonstrate strong leadership qualities as well as high academic merit.

Susan Brown Advancing Technology Education Scholarship

This scholarship recognizes the growing need for support of students interested in teaching technology to faculty and students.

Qualifications:

  • Recipient can be either an undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing.
  • Must have completed winter quarter 2018 at WWU.
  • Preference given to students who volunteer through the Student Technology Center.
  • Applicant must show a demonstrated commitment to advancing technology education.

Talitha E. Carleton Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship honors Talitha Carleton, a gifted teacher whose strength of character, humanity and lively mind inspired many. This scholarship is intended for a student with an "inquiring mind who is altruistic, socially responsible, highly principled and shows promise of future achievement."

Qualifications:

  • WWU student, continuing graduate or undergraduate, in the liberal or fine and performing arts.
  • Must have completed winter quarter 2018 at WWU.
  • Academic achievement. In general, only students with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above in their major need apply. However, other criteria, such as financial need, leadership qualities and activities will also be considered.

WWU Retirement Association Scholarship

The Western Washington University Retirement Association offers this scholarship to current WWU students.

Qualifications:

  • Student must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Undergraduate students with a minimum of 90 credits completed prior to the start of fall 2018.
  • Must have completed winter quarter 2018 at WWU.
  • Must attend at least half time, 6 credits per quarter, in 2018-2019.
  • A minimum GPA of 2.7

WWU Spirit Scholarship

This scholarship recognizes current students who have demonstrated school spirit. One $2,000 scholarship will be awarded for 2018-2019.  

Qualifications:

  • Must have completed winter quarter 2018 at WWU.
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.10.
  • Have demonstrated school spirit at Western through their activities and involvement.

Western Foundation Academic Excellence Scholarship

This scholarship program, established in 1994, is supported by contributions to the Western Foundation’s general academic scholarship program for students with high academic merit and achievement.

Qualifications:

  • Continuing WWU undergraduate students of sophomore, junior or senior status.
  • Must have completed winter quarter 2018 at WWU.
  • Selection is based primarily on academic achievement. In general, only students with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above need apply. However, activities such as employment and community service may be taken into consideration.
  • Applicants must have a minimum of three quarters of undergraduate study remaining toward their degree in order to be eligible.

Whatcom Educational Credit Union (WECU) Scholarship

Four $1,500 scholarships offered by Whatcom Educational Credit Union (WECU) will be awarded to Western Washington University students for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Qualifications:

  • Full-time students (taking a minimum of 12 credits), pursuing a degree with at least 90 credits completed prior to the start of fall 2018. Transfer students who are entering with 90 credits or more may apply.
  • Minimum accumulated GPA of 2.75
  • Student must demonstrate financial need. The 2018-2019 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be used to determine financial need.
  • Applicant must be a member in good standing at WECU for a minimum of one year. Previous recipients are not eligible to apply.

Women of Western Scholarship

The campus-affiliated group Women of Western offers scholarships to full-time WWU students.

Qualifications:

  • Students of any gender who will have senior status (135 completed credits) prior to the start of fall 2018.
  • Must have completed winter quarter 2018 at WWU.
  • Preference will be given to students who demonstrate academic merit, leadership qualities, and financial need.

Womxn of Color Empowerment Scholarship

The Womxn of Color Empowerment Scholarship was established in February 2007 to provide financial assistance and educational opportunities for WWU students. Up to three scholarships will be awarded ranging from $500-$1,000. Scholarships are available to students who demonstrate support for or experience with the issues and concerns of womxn of color at Western.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Be currently enrolled at Western Washington University
  • Have a cumulative 2.5 grade point average (GPA) or above
  • Have successfully completed at least 24 credits, if an undergraduate student or at least 16 credits, if a graduate student
  • Attend Western full-time in the 2018-2019 academic year (Full-time status is 12+ credits per quarter for undergraduate students or 8+ credits per quarter for graduate students)
